African drumming, henna hand painting, fairly traded crafts from around the world and international food stalls were just some of what was on offer at the 2008 World Festival Wiltshire at Chippenham’s Olympiad.

This exciting new event, which organisers hope will be repeated annually, was staged by a partnership of local organisations including Westlea Housing Association, Connexions, Community First and the Citizens Advice Bureau, with further support from Doorway, Wiltshire County Council and Wiltshire Police.

“The idea behind the day was to have a dynamic and hands-on celebration of the wonderfully diverse range of cultures and groups that make North Wiltshire a great place to live and work,” explained Sarah Offord, Neighbourhood Involvement Advisor for Westlea Housing.

“The event was open to local people of all ages and we had around 300 people at the event during the day. It was a fun and colourful event and people seemed to particularly enjoy the African drumming, henna hand painting and Bollywood dance sessions.”

Community groups and local organisations including the Police and the library were also on hand to promote and share their activities. And a world market sold authentic and fairly traded art, crafts, and gifts from around the world. Visitors to the Festival also had the chance to taste a variety of exotic dishes served at food stalls.
