The contractor
has been selected for the redevelopment of Phelps Parade in Calne - which
means this exciting new project that's set to transform the town centre
is now underway.
North Wiltshire District Council and Westlea Housing, part of the GreenSquare
Group, are working in partnership on the redevelopment of Phelps Parade.
When complete, this project will revitalise the town centre and provide
a new Woolworths store, further shops and new homes.
As developer, Westlea had already obtained planning permission for the
scheme which has been designed by its in-house architects team and
has now selected Crampton Leighfield as the contractor to complete the
building work. Work will start on site this month, with demolition taking
place in August.
Ann Cornelius, Managing Director of Westlea Housing says: "We have
been working closely with the District Council for some time to develop
this latest stage of improvements in Calne town centre and are glad that,
with the appointment of Crampton Leighfield as our contractor, work is
now able to get underway. The new shops will give residents more choice
and encourage trade in the town centre; and we're really pleased to be
providing 16 high quality homes for affordable rent, helping local people
who are unable to afford to buy their own home."
The Leader of North Wiltshire District Council, Cllr Dick Tonge, says:
"This is an exciting project for the people of Calne and we are delighted
that it has attracted one of the best known names on the UK High Street.
The brand new Woolworths store will provide a huge improvement in retail
choice for local shoppers and shows the commitment we all have to improve
Calne Town Centre. We are all working to ensure that this scheme revitalises
Phelps Parade with a high quality development providing a mix of new of
shops and housing."
Crampton Leighfield have extensive experience of delivering varied high
quality development projects in the housing, industrial and retail sectors.
Now trading as Crampton Leighfield, RJ Leighfield and Sons is a well-established
local company originally founded in 1885 by Richard James Leighfield
when he was 26 years of age, operating from Swindon. The firm has recently
relocated to Coped Hall Business Park in Wootton Bassett, which itself
is one of the company's recent developments.
The Phelps Parade redevelopment project is due to be completed in Autumn
2009. During early 2009, the District Council will be making other improvements
to Phelps Parade which are likely to include new paving, landscaping and
the replacement of shop canopies.
