What is the Disability Forum?

The Forum is held three times a year. It is open to Westlea residents of any age who have a disability or who care for someone with a disability.

Disability

Why have a Disability Forum?

45% of Westlea residents have a disability and 40% are living with someone who has a disability (Status Survey, 2009). If you are one of these residents the Forum aims to:

  • Talk about the issues that matter to you
  • Provide an opportunity for you to put forward ideas for change and improvement in Westlea services
  • Give information about relevant support provided by Westlea and other agencies
  • Improve awareness of residents living with a diverse range of disabilities.

What do we mean by disabled?

Someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term impact on their day-to-day lives.

What happens at a Forum?

  • You can take part in discussions with Westlea staff and help improve services
  • You can hear about support available for residents with disabilities
  • You can find out about other services, recent guests have been: Citizens Advice, The Independent Living Centre, Carers Support, Wiltshire Involvement Network, Wiltshire & Swindon Users Network, RNID.

Disability Steering Group

Forum meetings are planned by a steering group of residents. They are guided by feedback from meetings and surveys.

We also organise

  • Trips – we have been to Longleat and St Fagans
  • Training events – sign language, first aid, painting, crafts, gardening
  • No Barriers Day – we have worked with Westlea and the local council to put on events to recognise the international disability awareness.

How will I hear about the Forum meetings?

We send a newsletter with an invitation to Westlea residents who we know have a disability. If you don’t receive any information from us and would like to, please let us know.

I may not be interested in coming to meetings. How can I find out what is happening?

  • You can receive information through the Disability Forum Newsletter.
  • You don’t have to come to meeting to put forward your views
  • Contact Julie Bielby, Westlea’s Neighbourhood Involvement Team, 01249 466054
  • Look on Westlea’s website.
